Matt. 6:5-6 "And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
The Lord Jesus Christ started teaching His disciples about prayer as we can read in the book of Matthew. Christ is the best teacher we can find about the topic of prayer. Many people want to experience a fruitful and powerful prayer life and enjoy a close relationship with Christ. Let’s see how the Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples.
Firstly, the Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples that prayer is not a religious work to impress people. Prayer is not made to reach people's ears but to reach the ears of God who answers prayer. Christ called people who tried to impress people with their prayers hypocrites because their prayers didn’t get higher than the ceilings or trees they were standing under. Man-made religion is a play in a theater, a show, and a drama. And the actors in a man-made religion are called hypocrites by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
Prayer is not about giving a show here on earth but about showing up in the Heavenly Realms before the King of kings and the Lord of lords.
Secondly, the Lord Jesus Christ taught His disciples the first concept of prayer, the location of prayer. The location of prayer is the beginning and the most important part of having a close encounter with God the Father. Prayer is about the realm, dimensions, or positions in Christ you can operate. The Greek word for the secret place is KRYPTOS (G2927) which means, hidden, concealed, and secret.
When we pray, we have to seek God and come into His presence. The Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples to enter into the secret place. The disciples were young Jewish men who had a measure of understanding of the Old Testament. The secret place is mentioned multiple times in the Old Testament. Let’s research this together.
Ps. 27:5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle, He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.
The secret place is the place where we can encounter God. Here in Psalm 27, the secret place is called “the secret place of His tabernacle.” The secret place of His tabernacle is the Most Holy Place where God’s Presence is. The secret place is a place of protection where you can go in time of need. The secret place is a doorway to enter a higher place, “He will set you high upon a rock.” The secret place is a realm, dimension, and position.
Through prayer, God can lift you high above your worries, fears, and circumstances.
Ps. 31:20 You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence From the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion From the strife of tongues.
Here in Psalm 31, we see the secret place as a refuge protecting us against the plots of man and the devil. Here the secret place is called “the secret place of Your presence.” Prayer is about coming into God’s Presence and knowing that you have a great God who loves and cares for you. God will hide you from the devil’s lies and accusations, the stiving of tongues. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all our sins and unrighteousness. The blood of Jesus Christ brings us into God’s Presence and stops the accusations of the devil. (Hebr. 10:19)
Ps. 81:7 You called in trouble, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah
Here in Psalm 81, we see that the secret place is called “the secret place of thunder.” God manifested Himself as a fire and as a cloud. God can manifest Himself in a gentle way but also in a mighty terrifying way. When we come into the secret place of thunder, we will see how God will intervene for us when we pray to Him. God can and will intervene in a mighty, terrifying, and supernatural way.
Ps. 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Here in Psalm 91, we find “the secret place of the Most High.” The secret place of the Most High is a place where we can dwell, abide, and live continually. To be in the secret place means to live in unbroken fellowship with God, it is the place of intimacy with God. The secret place is the place for the lovers of God to experience His protection and blessings. God will bring the people who love Him to a higher place, a higher dimension.
Ps. 91:14 "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
We pray to the Father and communicate with Him from heart to heart. We communicate from our secret place to His secret place. In the secret place, we discover that we are in the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit is in us. We are in the Kingdom and the Kingdom is in us, we are in His love and His love is in us. We are in the Father and the Father is in us, we are in Christ and Christ is in us. We are in the Vine and the Vine is in us, we are ONE!
Matt. 6:6 pray to your Father who is in the secret place, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
