THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A PERSON

Updated: Dec 25, 2024

This is one of the most important studies for our daily life as believers. We Christians should be led by the Holy Spirit; this is the only way to live a Christian life. Even our Lord Jesus Christ was led by the Holy Spirit.

Hebr. 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish unto God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The Holy Spirit lives in the believer’s heart (born again) and is doing the work of Christ in our lives. Christ means “Anointed,” and the Holy Spirit is the anointing and power we need.

John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth Him not, neither knoweth Him; ye know Him; for He abideth with you, and shall be in you.

This study will help us to know "the other Comforter/Helper,” the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been sent by the Father and the Son to indwell and guide the believers.

Many people believe that the Holy Spirit is just a servant of the Father and the Son, this is incorrect because the Holy Spirit is equal with them. We need to know that the Holy Spirit is God. Other people believe that the Holy Spirit is some force or power to help us, something like electricity. This is also incorrect because we will see that the Holy Spirit is not just a power but He is a Person!

We will see in this study that the Holy Spirit is a Person because He convicts, He teaches, He speaks, He prays, He leads, He delegates, He has been sent, and He works in colorful ways through the believer.

The Holy Spirit works like only a Person can work. The Holy Spirit acts like only a Person can act. The Holy Spirit has a will, knowledge, and emotions, this proves that He is a Person who has character and personality.

A. The Holy Spirit convicts the world.

John 16:8-11 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

A work of The Holy Spirit is that he convinces the world, this is including believers and unbelievers, from sin because they don’t believe in Jesus Christ. The only reason why people will perish is because of unbelief in the Savior of the world.

The Holy Spirit also convinces us of righteousness, Jesus Christ was sinless so it was righteous that He rose from the dead and ascended to heaven and to sit on the throne with the Father.

The Holy Spirit convinces us from judgment and reveals that the ruler of this world, the devil, is judged already. The Holy Spirit has to convince us that we don’t need to be scared of the devil but that the devil should be scared of us. The Holy Spirit has to open our eyes to see the great victory Christ won for us. Now people have to choose between Jesus Christ the victorious One, or the devil who is the Loser. Make your choice!

B. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher

He wants to teach us all things. That means we can ask Him for guidance in any situation in our lives. The Holy Spirit is a gentleman so we should ask Him. The Holy Spirit will also help you to remember the Word of God and what Christ has told you in the past. The Holy Spirit will lead you to the full truth and will tell you the future. The Holy Spirit will also give you instruction in all areas of your life. We can find this in the following scriptures.

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Neh. 9:20 You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, And did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, And gave them water for their thirst.

C. The Holy Spirit speaks!

The Holy Spirit can speak to you and He can help you to speak. The Holy Spirit can speak to you and give you wisdom and direction. The Holy Spirit can also help you to speak the written words when you minister or when you come in difficult situations.

2Sam. 23:2  "The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue.

Gal. 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!"

Matt. 10:19-20 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Rev. 2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God."

D. The Holy Spirit prays and makes intercession.

The Holy Spirit helps us to pray in our weaknesses but also prays through us. The Holy Spirit knows the deep things of God and knows God’s will. The Holy Spirit helps us to pray according to God's will, and these kinds of prayers will be heard by God.

Rom. 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

Eph. 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

E. The Holy Spirit leads the spirit-filled believer.

The Holy Spirit wants to lead the believers to victory. He wants to lead us in our destiny so we can fulfill our scroll or the book that was written before the world was created. Eph. 1:5, Ps. 139:16

Rom. 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Gal. 5:18  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Here are some verses about how the first believers in the Book of Acts were led by the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot."
Acts 10:19-20 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are seeking you. 20 Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them."
Acts 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
Acts 16:6-7 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.

F. The Holy Spirit appoints the believer his assignment or work he should do.

The Holy Spirit knows the dreams and visions that God has put deep inside of us. The Holy Spirit prepares us and helps us to do the work He called us for.

Acts 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
Acts  20:28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

G. The Holy Spirit has been sent like Jesus Christ had been sent into the world.

The Holy Spirit has been sent into the world to fulfill God’s purpose and help believers become like Christ.

John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

H. The Holy Spirit works in different ways in the believer.

The Holy Spirit has driven especially the Holy men of God who have written the Holy Scripture. The Holy Spirit manifests Himself through the believers in various ways and with various gifts. The Holy Spirit is colorful and works in creative ways in the believer.

2Pet. 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
2 Tim. 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
Rom. 12:6-8 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
1Cor. 12:7-11 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
